My Father-in-law plays in a band as a hobby and has quite a few guitars. Most of them are stored in their cases or leaning up against other items in the house. So, as a gift, I decided to make him some custom DIY guitar wall hangers that are shaped like a guitar pick! These were very easy to make and also did not take long. So, if you are in need of a gift for a music-lover, these are the perfect DIY creation that you can customize to any theme you like, the possibilities are endless!
DIY Guitar Hanger Materials:
Wood:
Quantity: | Size |
1 half sheet | 1/2″ Plywood |
Supplies:
(affliliate links)
Guitar Hangers | Dark Walnut Wood Stain |
|
Interior Water-Based Polyurethane |
Paint Pens |
Carbon Transfer Paper |
DIY Guitar Hanger Instructions:
First, print a picture of the outline of a guitar pick in Microsoft Excel (this will allow you to print the picture across multiple pieces of paper). You can expand the pic to any size you like (use the view ruler option in Excel so you can tell what the dimensions of your picture are prior to printing). Once all pages have printed, align the pages so the picture lines up and then tape the sheets of paper together.

Print an outline of a guitar pick in Excel, and then tape the sheets of paper together to form the complete outline
Next, place a 1/2 sheet of 1/2″ plywood onto sawhorses or another type of raised surface. Place a piece of carbon transfer paper on top of the plywood, and then trace the image of the guitar pick outline onto the plywood.

Next, using a jig saw, cut out the traced guitar pick shaped pieces of wood, and then sand until smooth. Apply a coat of Dark Walnut Stain and let dry.
While the stain is drying, print out the copies of the images you want as the design on the wood guitar holder backing.

Next, place the printed images over the pick-shaped wood pieces and lightly tape the paper to the wood pieces. Using a pen or pencil, trace the image pressing hard enough to leave an indentation on the wood pieces.

Once the entire image has been traced, begin filling in the tracing with the paint pens.

Once the paint has completely dried, coat each board in three coats of interior polyurethane, letting each coat dry between applications.
Next, once the polyurethane is dry, install the purchased guitar hangers onto the wood backing (I also installed a small pick storage container at the top of one of the boards).
Once the guitar hangers have been installed, you’ll have some beautiful, custom guitar hangers.

How are these hung on theup on the wall
Hi Jasmine, easiest way is to attach the wood to wall with a screw drilled through the wood into a stud in the wall. Hope your hat helps!
This is an awesome gift idea! Thank you for the tutorial.
