I’m always looking for creative ways to create art for my walls and I love the combination of metal and wood wall art (my previous wall art post was also a combo of metal and wood, you can see that post here). Hobby Lobby sells cute metal signs in different sizes, colors, and designs and they often have these signs on sale for 40% to 50% off, so they can be an inexpensive way to add some creative art to your walls. One of the walls in my Master Bedroom was in need of some decor, so I bought a pretty and romantic sign and decided to add a wood backing to it to give it a warm but rustic feel. Here is what I came up with:
The metal “Happily Ever After” sign was normally $9.99, but I bought it when it was 50% off, so I only paid $5 for it! Gotta love Hobby Lobby sales! 🙂
The wood backing was very easy to make.
- 1 – 1×6 @ 6 ft (or a total of 24″ if you have spare 1×6 boards around)
- Kreg Jig and 1 1/2″ pocket hole screws
- wood glue
- 3/4″ screws (2)
- Wall hanging mount
First I cut the 1×6 board into two 24″ long pieces. Then, using my Kreg Jig, I drilled 3/4″ pocket hole screws into one of the boards and attached the two boards using wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws.
I sanded the boards and applied Minwax American Walnut stain. Here is what it looked like once dry:
I then attached a picture hanging hook to the back:
Next, attach two 3/4″ long screws to the board in a location that would allow the metal sign to hang directly in the center of the wood board backing.
Finally, hang the wood and metal wall art on the wall of your choice and enjoy! 🙂
